Today in WWII

WWII Today, Saturday, October 3: Poland's plunder, Vichy's first antisemitic law, the first V-2 flight, and the Scheldt

1939: In occupied Poland, Hans Frank, who would go on to lead the German occupation government, called for the "ruthless exploitation" of the country. Economic plunder and terror were already becoming policy.

1940: Neville Chamberlain resigned from the government for health reasons, months after leaving No. 10. The same day, Vichy France enacted its first nationwide antisemitic law, the Statut des Juifs. It defined who counted as Jewish under French law and barred Jews from the officer corps, civil service, teaching, the judiciary, and the press.

1942: At Peenemuende on the Baltic, Germany's A-4 rocket, later called the V-2, made its first successful test flight. At Stalingrad, the German 6th Army pushed the Soviet 62nd Army back toward the Volga.

1944 (Canadian angle): The Battle of the Scheldt was under way, running roughly from October 2 to November 8. First Canadian Army was fighting through flooded polder and canal country to clear the approaches to Antwerp. The Allies needed that port, and Canada took thousands of casualties before the estuary was open.

Note: some roundups say German forces evacuated Athens on October 3, 1944, but other references put the final withdrawal on October 12, so that date is disputed and left out.
